Finger Style Guitar
Stephen Bennett

My plan is to make sure folks leave with a new tune under the belt, or at least under their belt if they put some more practice into what I’ve shown them. I am going to teach an arrangement of some American classic: possibly The Munsters. This will be a solid and accurate solo guitar arrangement of the theme. I will present it so that it can be usefully absorbed at various skill levels simultaneously and as long as attendees have a bit of basic finger style guitar playing experience behind them - they will be fine. I will have everyone playing every individual musical phrase of the theme sufficiently enough that with further practice, everyone should be able to play the tune. There will be some time at the beginning of the workshop spent doing a few warm-up exercises. A bit of time will be spent later on to answer any guitar or other music-related questions. Intermediate / advanced workshop runs from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. with 11/2 hour lunch break. The cost is $60 per student with a maximum of 20 participants.

*CLASS IS FULL* Flat Pick Guitar
Dan Crary

This year the Flat Pick Guitar workshop will welcome flatpickers to a session that is intended to jump start their progress on the guitar. Dan Says: “Hey, everybody, it’s time for us to get inspired and motivated again, get untangled from the things that hang us up and find the way to advance toward being real players. We all need to be able to do great rhythm playing, improvise breaks, make our own arrangements to tunes, and use practice time effectively to make regular, daily progress. I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how the great players did that themselves, and you can do it as well. In addition, I can show you how to learn trad tunes in a fraction of the time you’ve been spending.” This workshop is for almost everyone: if you play a little, know a couple of tunes or if you know more but still have areas that need work like improv, arranging, creating your own versions of music, arranging and accompanying songs, then you’re welcome. The workshop runs from 10:00 am. to 4:00 pm with 11/2 hour lunch break. The cost is $60 per student with a maximum of 25 participants.

Hammer Dulcimer
Russell Cook

Both beginners and somewhat experienced players will benefit tremendously from this intense 3 hour workshop crammed with tons of information and techniques. It is designed to provide a foundation of how and where to play melodies then introducing how to embellish and arrange those tunes, especially using chords and arpeggios. A great workshop for simplifying this wonderfully easily and often misunderstood folk instrument. Instruments are required. “Want-to-be” players may rent an instrument for $25 and should contact Master Works directly at 580-847-2273 or email Master Works 2 weeks in advance for rentals. All playing levels workshop runs from 9:00 am. to Noon. Cost is $45.

Mountain Dulcimer
Gary Gallier

Workshop 1 - dAD tuning - Flatpicked Dulcimer and the Alternating Pick Stroke - We will focus on playing melody across the strings utilizing the alternating pick technique. Time tested by the greatest guitar players and applied to the dulcimer. Fundamental rules, exercises, and tunes that use the technique will be taught. Intermediate and up, from 9:30 am. to 11:30 am.
Workshop 2. - dAD tuning, Playing Cross Key - This workshop will focus on playing in keys other than the open dAD tuning, without use of a capo, or the need to re-tune. Cross string scale study, and several tunes in different keys will be taught. NOTE: To get the most out of this workshop, it would be best if your dulcimer has a 1.5 fret. It is not mandatory however...there are ways to cheat in some keys. Intermediate and up, from 1:00 pm. to 3:00 pm. Cost of $30 for each class; $50 if you take them both. Maximum of 15 participants per class.
