Flatpicking from Fiddle Tunes to Swing - Robert Shafer
This class will cover traditional fiddle music as well as swing music and (in some cases, depending on the song) show how to combine the styles. Techniques covered will include open string (floating) ideas, developing new licks and ideas from chord and arpeggio substitution and adding swing/jazz ideas to your playing. Texas style (contest) rhythm patterns will also be discussed and demonstrated. If that’s not enough to keep you busy, we’ll also do a section on speed picking that will discuss how to develop and tastefully incorporate double time licks into solos. Intermediate / Advanced Flatpick Guitar workshop runs from 10:00 am. to 4:00 pm. with a 1½ hour lunch break. The cost is $60 per student with a maximum of 30 students.
Mandolin: Bluegrass to New Grass to Classical - Johnny Staats
This class will deal with improving your technique on everything from traditional bluegrass to new grass/jazz styles and will even touch on some classical technique. Topics covered will be crosspicking, speed picking, open string (floating) ideas and how to tastefully use pull-offs and hammer-ons in the course of a solo. Traditional fiddle tune styles and techniques will also be demonstrated and discussed. All in all, a master class from a master musician. Intermediate / Advanced Mandolin workshop runs from 10:00 am. to 4:00 pm. with a 1½ hour lunch break. The cost is $60 per student with a maximum of 30 students.
Songwriting - Michael Reno Harrell
This workshop includes “in class” writing exercises as well as offering tips on getting a song published and recorded. Michael will provide printed handouts for the students. With an extensive background in songwriting, Michael has taught many workshops. He will provide encouragement as well as educational ideas to help take your songwriting to the next level. In addition to the workshop program there will be time for a critique of any song that the attendee might want to perform. The Songwriting workshop runs from 10:00 am. to 4:00 pm. with a 1½ hour lunch break. The cost is $60 per student with a maximum of 30 students.
Finger Style Guitar - Pete Huttlinger & Nick Charles
Pete will help students with everything from basic techniques to playing tunes to arranging ideas and concepts. Pete helps to make each student comfortable and is able to bring out the best in everybody. All levels are welcome though beginners are strongly encouraged to take several private lessons before attending the class. Joining Pete will be award winning Australian Nick Charles. Nick will be sharing a number of topics related to finger style guitar and general musicality. He will discuss composition of diatonic and blues based finger style guitar music with reference to some pieces specially presented for the workshop as well as arrangements of some useful classic pieces. Both are vastly experienced teachers and welcome all levels to the workshop though it’s certainly advisable to have some basic skills to make the most of the day. Class is from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with a break for lunch. Cost is $60 with a maximum of 40 students.
Porch Pickers’ Guitar 201....The Next Workshop - Andy May
OK. So you’ve worked hard to get the basics down. You can play those 1st position chords and can handle some melody. Andy will help you take what you know to the next level. He will further explore flat picking & finger picking techniques for lead and accompaniment, help you build your confidence, and introduce you to performance skills and jam etiquette— all things you’ll need in order to take your playing in public and just plain have more fun with your music. Banjo - Ned Luberecki
The workshop will include developing banjo solos from the basic melody, blending styles (Scruggs, Melodic, Single String), backup (and playing fills), playing in different keys without a capo, tone and timing. Bluegrass Vocals - Chris Jones
This class will strive to provide techniques and tools to learn new bluegrass vocal skills and improve and build on existing ones. A lot of emphasis will be placed on bluegrass harmony singing, and we’ll make it a goal to teach all parts to everyone, by learning songs in a variety of ranges. We’ll tackle the issue of learning to hear your part, keeping your part in tune and other harmony challenges. We’ll also spend some time on lead-singing technique, learning to sing with more soul (good news: this will not require getting a divorce or losing your job, even though these are known to improve soulful singing), taking care of your voice, and building a repertoire. A musical instrument will not be necessary. The Bluegrass Vocals workshop runs from 10:00 am. to 4:30 pm. with a 1½ hour lunch break. The cost is $60 per student with a maximum of 20 students.
Hammered Dulcimer - Linda Thomas
The workshop will provide time for instruction and lots of playing time as players develop skills in technique and interpretation while building repertoire on the HD. Other topics covered will include embellishments, playing back-up and jamming. Join other players for a full day of fun and playing HD in a workshop designed to take your playing to the “next level”. The Hammered Dulcimer workshop runs from 10:00 am. to 4:00 pm. with a lunch break from 11:30 am. to 1:00 pm. The cost is $50 per student with a maximum of 25 students.
