In his native land, Nick Charles is lauded as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues” and the most prominent guitar publication there has called him “an awesome talent”. His music is an eclectic mix of blues, ragtime, early jazz with a serious dash of Merle, Doc and Chet. His melodic influences are also many and varied and a typical show could include a W.C Handy blues, followed by a Beatle melody leading into a jazz standard. In his more than 25 years touring and recording he has released more than a dozen albums that feature a healthy mix of original guitar instrumentals, soulfully interpreted covers and original songs.
Since 2006 his music has been available in the US through Solid Air Records, “the home of the world’s finest guitarists” and he has also featured on many of their award winning concept albums. This year Solid Air will be releasing his latest album, “The Return of the Travelling Fingerpicker” and his first instructional DVD.
As Nick so often states, “it doesn’t matter what I play, I always manage to find a little blues in there somewhere”. It was his early exposure to his acoustic blues heroes that first started him fingerpicking and he further notes that one of his main idols, Doc Watson, often refers to much of his repertoire as “blues”. It’s that unique blend of his personal musical roots that creates a distinctive style that’s coming to be appreciated across the world.
Festival goers are sure to be drawn to the performances of his wonderful melodic compositions, songs and stories from a lifetime on the world’s musical highways.
| Nick Charles also was a participant with two songs showcased in the 2002 New Songs Showcase. |
