Cathy Fink - Banjo for Guitar Players

Saturday, March 20, 2021 - 9am to 10:30am CDT

If you have been dreaming of applying your guitar skills to the banjo, but you want to sound like a REAL banjo player, this workshop is for you. Get your banjo out and learn the right hand techniques that make it such a unique instrument. You’ll find the left hand to be easy. So we will focus on both the right hand of clawhammer playing (also known as frailing) and of bluegrass playing (with thumb pick & 2 fingerpicks picks). We’ll also talk about the many tuning options a five-string banjo offers. And of course, we’ll learn a tune!

Cathy Fink - Clawhammer Banjo for Beginners

Saturday, March 20, 2021 — 9am to 10:30am CDT

An introductory workshop on playing the clawhammer/frailing, down picking style of banjo. Think Grandpa Jones, Cousin Emmy, even some Ralph Stanley tunes were recorded in the clawhammer style. If you’ve played a little, but haven’t quite got the knack, join us. If you are brand new to banjo, join us!

Cathy Fink - Banjo for Intermediate Players

Sunday, March 21, 2021 - 1pm to 2:30pm CDT

You ain’t a beginner and you ain’t advanced, you right in the middle. That means you can play a few tunes and chords in a few tunings (G and double C) and you’ve got a decent handle on the right hand clawhammer style. Improve your right and left hand techniques with tips, tricks, scales and drills. Learn to hammer on, pull off and slide notes. There will be tips for changing tunings quicky and an intro to double thumbing (often called drop thumb) Then we’ll apply this to some standard clawhammer/old-time repertoire. If there’s time, we’ll add a few tunings to the mix.
